Living Room Color

I had no problem choosing the color for the kitchen, but I've gotten countless color swatches for the living room. I want something green, but without too much yellow. Or blue. Or too dark.

Nothing seems perfect.

The closest I've gotten is a Benjamin Moore color called Creekside Green and a Glidden called Hazy Sage. The colors on the walls now, I was not so affectionately calling "Banana Cream Pie". My husband said it was more like something else, bananas foster or banana split or mashed banana mashed banana. We found the almost *exact* match in Glidden. BANANA CREAM PIE.

Mm. Anyway, the color is offensive to my delicate sense of style, and incredibly warm, giving the room a sickly orange cast. Maybe now you can understand why I fear a green with too much yellow in it.

Benjamin Moore "Creekside Green"
Glidden "Hazy Sage"
What's in the room:
Crystal Spider Lamp in "Pewter"
Mainstays Poly Duck Strip Curtain in "Palm"
Hometrends Welgrove Floor Lamp
Sofa and Loveseat in "Stoked Midnight"
Erias Home Designs Suave 49 in. x 13 in. Framed Mirror, White (3)

May I Gush?

I'm tickled with the changes we're making at the Cape. I really am!

Over the weekend my mom saw that Big Lots was having a store-wide 20% off sale. After hitting up our local Sears Outlet and finding NOTHING in the way of washers and dryers that had decent prices, we decided we'd see if we could find some good deals at Big Lots. Lo and behold over in the hardware, they had Guard doorknobs (locking exterior and bed and bath), in Aged/Antique Bronze, for $8.00 a piece! Knock off 20% and that brought them down to $6.40 each.

I was thrilled! Not only are the polished brass knobs in the house dated, but not a one of them matches another.

I've only gotten the kitchen and entryway done as far as sanding, priming and painting goes. I love the kitchen in Glidden's Pebble Gray, and the white I'm putting on the woodwork brightens the place up substantially.

Have a look for yourself.

It's sooo late in the day, but I'll probably head over to the Cape and start sanding and priming the office's woodwork and perhaps the master bedroom, as well. I'm having a hard time moving today, and I've already downed a cuppa.

My First Strike on Natural Woodwork

Over the last few days I've been sanding and painting. My poor manicure just doesn't stand a chance.

I am happy to say though, that I have 2 coats on one half of the kitchen woodwork and my first coat on the other, which is also the living room entrance. Yay! Look closely and you'll see my new linoleum floor, too!

Before
After

The window and door, painted!

I have 2 lights to replace that 90's white ones (with gold leaves!) that are currently hung in the kitchen.
Guy and I got the new oven and fridge in, too!

This weekend we're going to go through and replace as many switches and outlets as we can while we have daylight.
And I'd like to get the kitchen painted, as I've got the paint and supplies ready to go. See the paint on the bottom? It was just a little over $8 on the oops rack at Walmart. It's a perfect color for the back entrance/stairway into the basement.

Dust

I've never had to deal with as much dust as things in this house kick up.

I've been having a trying week. I doubled my medication and I've gone from anxiety to body spasms to the scariest nightmares possible.

So to shake off the willies, I went over to the cape and decided to start sanding the kitchen door and frame.

I'm giving the woodwork a light sanding so my paint will stick. All the woodwork is an oak color and is super shiny. Now that the floors are so dark, the oak looks ridiculous. I'm painting the woodwork with Behr Ultra Pure White Hi-Gloss Enamel Interior/Exterior Paint.

Sanding helped me feel a little better, I won't lie.

I went from this:
To this:
I've gotten one side painted white, and it's sitting, drying. I didn't do the frame and I'm too short to even access one part, so I'll make Guy do it when he gets home :)

I really want to get the kitchen done. I've got a stove and fridge ready along with the wallbase in black. I picked out the wall color, too. The cabinets are going white (duh) and the walls Pebble Grey by Glidden.

Little Cape's New Years Resolutions

Happy new year, readers!

This year, (and last year... this has taken a really. long. time) we decided that we'd sand and refinish the Cape's oak hardwood floors.

I'll make a real long story short and say whoa! We rented an orbital sander which even I could use, but boy is it a lot of work. Physically, it kicks your ass. And if you aren't prepared for dust...

Guy sanding, and sanding, and sanding...

We are past the sanding and staining. Now we start the polyurethane.

Floor, sanded and cleaned with Mineral Spirits
We decided to go DARK, so we opted for Varathane wood stain in Kona. I have always wanted to get rid of the "natural" woodwork and now we have no choice, bright white it is! I like it when things work out that way.

Isn't it an amazing color? We already ordered our furniture and I'm on the lookout for inexpensive rugs. I'm excited/so eager to be done with the floors. They've put a halt on doing ANYTHING else in the meantime, and then the polyurethane needs 24 hours and a rough up between coats.

I keep telling myself... "maintenance free floors... shiny floors..."
