Our Dresser - The Unveiling!

Our $20.00 thrift store dresser is finished! Let's refresh your memory... before...
Dresser - Before

We cleaned it with water and mild detergent, sanded only where necessary, and used Minwax Gel Stain in Hickory to deepen the color. We replaced the knobs and spray painted the stiletto tips with silver spray paint.

Look at it now!

Mid Century Chrome Chandelier

Take two photoshoot! I'm doing some digging around, I'd like to uncover who the manufacturer of this chandelier was and when it's from. I've found a few sales listings for similar hanging lights, but they don't have much information, either. I've found fixtures that have four, five and even eight lights. I'm guesing the mid to late 1960's on this. Did it have different manufacturers? Which style of globes did it come with?

A little Mid-Century Chrome for our Kitchen

I have no problem admitting that, once in a BLUE moon, I overlook an object that is in fact a diamond in the rough. I'm thankful that my husband and my brother could see, in my moment of blindness, a treasure.

I had intended from the beginning to paint and hang a chandelier like this as the second light in my eat-in kitchen:
Little Cape Cod: teal and yellow painted chandeliers
Pinterest is taking over my life
And I was loving the idea, but until I could devise a kitchen color scheme, it sat down in the basement, with its shiny brass finish, while this travesty hung in the kitchen.

Little Cape Cod: ugly flush mount light in white and gold
It came from the 90's

A while ago my brother gave me a silver fixture/chandelier. It was in need of a cleanup (it looked super rusty) and it was missing all four globes. I really didn't think it would, well... I couldn't visualize it finished, hanging, shiny.

So today we're at the Home Depot and we grabbed 4 super cheap glass globes. Now I'm feeling a little more stoked about this, because I was happy that the globes were standard and easily replaced.

I got to cleaning up the fixture and surprisingly, it wasn't much rust at all, mostly dirt. Yeah!

Dry it, stick the matching medallion on the ceiling and install*.

So here it is: I missed the boat on this one. It's clean and showy and looks perfect in the kitchen, where eventually, seating will be.

Also, I cannot take a picture that does this chandelier justice. I'll have to try again when the sun is up.

It has a total of five lights: Four that sit horizontally and one that points straight down. You can have on none, either, or all.

*Guy does all the electric wiring and mounting, while I sit in the next room and reassure the dog that nothing is wrong.

A place to store your socks..?

We've been without a dresser since we moved in. That's nearly six months! Our underthings are in BOXES in closets.

The trouble is, everywhere I looked, dressers were too expensive, too ugly, or too "aged". I wanted something (initially) that was curvy (think Queen Anne) and had cabriole legs. I want to be the one to paint it or stain it, and I kept running into a lot of pieces that were already "refinished".

So we're at Unique thrift store with my brother and his girlfriend the other day and I spot a short, wide dresser with clean lines and stiletto legs, clearly from the late 1950's to the 1960's. I look at the price taped to the top and how about that, $19.99! I love the legs, I love the Danish, mid-century vibe.

We grabbed the tag, paid, loaded it into Bambi and took it home. It's in the garage at the moment, somewhere between done and this, the condition we got it in:

Dresser top.

It came with hardware, but I'll be changing that anyway.

I'm so excited to finish it off and bring it in! I'm going super modern with it. Oh, and no more socks in cardboard boxes :)
